Field Guide · The judgment framework

Learn to choose, in the right order.

A practical sequence for choosing wenwan walnuts: assess risks, shell quality, surface quality and natural character before size or price.

01 / FIELD NOTES

One consistent sequence

Risks → shell quality → surface quality → natural character → size, pairing, price and popularity.

The first four layers establish the basis for a choice. Size, pairing, price and popularity come later. If an earlier layer is unresolved, a strong sales pitch cannot fill the gap.

02 / FIELD NOTES

Guzhi: the shell’s underlying quality

Guzhi, often literally called “bone quality” in Chinese collector language, describes the overall solidity and foundation of the shell. We use “shell quality” here to make the meaning clearer in English.

Consider density in the hand, firmness, structure, sound, surface behaviour and long-term feedback together. It is an experience-based collector term, rather than a single laboratory measurement, and it is not equivalent to the number on a scale.

03 / FIELD NOTES

Pizhi: surface quality

Pizhi refers to the condition, fineness and behaviour of the shell surface. Look for natural texture, stability, an even colour transition and a warm rather than harsh shine.

Youxing, or “oiliness”, describes a lasting warm, smooth feel in collector usage. It does not mean that a walnut is leaking oil, and it is not a reason to apply oil.

Practice with the actual pair

Ask for clear views in natural light, including the tip, base, sides and ridges. Compare shape and surface details without relying on flattering lighting.

A photo can show clues but cannot replace inspection of density, handling feel and the underlying condition. When evidence is insufficient, postpone the decision.

The choosing sequence

A foundation for your own judgment.

  1. 01

    Risks first

Check for artificial intervention, damage and premature harvesting. If a serious risk remains unresolved, stop before comparing appearance or price.

  2. 02

    Shell quality · guzhi

Assess the shell’s solidity, density in the hand, firmness, structural stability and foundation for long-term handling. Weight alone cannot establish quality.

  3. 03

    Surface quality · pizhi

Look for a natural, fine and stable surface, and the potential for gradual, even colour and a warm lustre. A glossy photograph is insufficient evidence.

  4. 04

    Natural character

Look at the shape, ridges, proportions and overall character. Natural variation is part of the fruit; perfect symmetry is not the starting point.

  5. 05

    Personal fit & price

Only then compare comfortable size, harmony between the two walnuts, price and market popularity.
